What is emulation?
Emulation is one of the greatest ways to discover various games and game systems that you may have never even known existed. It is the reproduction of an arcade or console gaming system that can be played on your personal computer. The Emulator is software that allows the roms ( game files)to be played and enjoyed, just as they would be on the actual game unit itself. The Emulator is totally legal itself, but the roms played on them are only legal if you actually own the game itself.

How does the Internet figure into game development?
Typically if you wanted to play a game with a friend, you and that friend would have to be at the same place to play. Now, with the aid of netplay, a capability that most good emulators possess, you and that friend can play each other from anywhere in the world via an internet connection. Gameplay itself will depend on connection type, ping, and how updated the emulator you are using compares to that of the person you play. Some emulators allow you to connect one on one while others use servers such as kaillera which may allow multiple players to join. Both ways are quite enjoyable and as you play more, you will have a better feel for those that you prefer.

With the introduction of emulator netplay,good servers to play and chat were needed. Kaillera, my personal favorite developed software, when used with certain emulators, will allow you to play with people all over the world. I generally try to find a sever that is close to where I am connected since the better pings have the less lag. Lag is when the two emulators connected are playing and they get out of sync with each other. The game will play slow or freeze up at some points. This is all just part of netplay.

I suppose I should mention that Zbattle network offers servers to be used with the Zsnes ( the best supernintendo emulator) and Console Classics offers servers with snes9x emulator. I will not bother to give the sites for these places, but with a search engine check, it would be easy to locate both. AOL users BE WARNED! Zbattle has banned all AOL users from using their servers, simply for the fact of a few bad apples on the AOL ISP.
